De Britse rockband Neck Deep heeft hun titelloze album Neck Deep aangekondigd, dat op 19 januari 2024 zal verschijnen via Hopeless Records.
“We zijn enorm enthousiast om onze nieuwe, zelfgemaakte, self-titled plaat aan te kondigen”, vertelt zanger Ben Barlow. “Net zoals in het begin, hebben we dit album helemaal zelf gemaakt. In onze opslagruimte in Noord-Wales, met Seb aan het roer en de rest van ons meekijkend over zijn schouder.”
Sinds de band ruim tien jaar geleden werd opgericht in de logeerkamer van de Barlow-broertjes in Wrexham, Wales, is er veel veranderd. Van het slordige, hoopvolle begin dat hoort bij de start van een tienerband, zijn de pop-punkers nu uitgegroeid tot een van de meest succesvolle mondiale exportproducten van de Britse rockmuziek, met top 5-albums in zowel de VS als het VK, flink wat tours, grote hits en meer dan een miljard streams op hun naam.
Nu staat de band aan de vooravond van hun vijfde, self-titled, LP en zien ze in dat hoe meer dingen veranderen, hoe meer ze – in sommige opzichten– hetzelfde blijven: “Op dit album is duidelijk te horen dat we onszelf kennen en weten waar we goed in zijn”, legt frontman en jongste Barlow-broer Ben uit. “We zijn helemaal onszelf. We zijn nu professionele songwriters en we concentreren ons op waar we goed in zijn, maar het is ook belangrijk dat wij plezier hebben en dat wij genieten van het schrijven. Er zitten kleine dingetjes in de mix waar ook ik de vinger niet echt op kan leggen, maar waardoor ik wel zeker weet dat het een Neck Deep nummer is. Wij doen gewoon ons ding zoals we altijd hebben gedaan.”
Voor deze plaat heeft de band, aangevuld met Ben’s oudere broer en bassist Seb Barlow, gitaristen Matt West en Sam Bowden en drummer Matt Powles het doen van ‘hun eigen ding’ – en alleen hun eigen ding – naar een hoger niveau getild. Ze doen niks met de lijst van producers die graag met ze willen werken en kiezen er in plaats daarvan voor om te schrijven en op te nemen in hun eigen ruimte, slechts kilometers verwijderd van waar ze zijn opgegroeid. Oldskool, net zoals vroeger.

UK-rock band Neck Deep have announced their upcoming self-titled album Neck Deep, set for release on January 19, 2024, via Hopeless Records.
“We’re so stoked to announce our new self made, self titled record,” shares vocalist Ben Barlow. “With a return to roots approach, we made this record ourselves at our warehouse in North Wales, with Seb at the helm, and the rest of us over his shoulder, like it was at the start.”
In the little over a decade since Neck Deep formed in the Barlow brothers’ spare room in Wrexham, Wales, a lot has changed. From the scrappy, naively hopeful beginnings that define the starting of so many teenage bands, the pop-punks have gone on to be one of British Rock music’s most successful global exports in recent memory: top 5 records in both the US and UK, global touring, viral hits and over a billion streams just some of the fruits of ten years spent mastering their craft.
As the band stand on the brink of their fifth, self-titled LP, there’s an acknowledgement that the more things change, the more – in some ways at least – they stay the same. “This album is the sound of us knowing ourselves and knowing our ability,” explains frontman and youngest Barlow sibling Ben. “It’s unapologetically us. We’re professional songwriters now and we’ve really honed in on what we’re good at – but it’s also about having fun and enjoying writing these tracks. And there are those little sonic signatures in the mix that even I can’t really put my finger on that just make it Neck Deep. It happens when we get in a room together and it clicks – it’s us just doing our thing like we always have.”
