Birth Of Joy – Life In Babalou

Birth Of Joy was founded in 2005, when singer/guitarist Kevin Stunnenberg met drummer Bob Hogenelst during the introduction week of the Herman Brood Academy. The assignment during that time was to make music together, without obligation. A keyboard player joined in for a while, but he turned out to be an annoying little guy. So, exit. And then a curly-haired guy walked in. Gertjan Gutman apparently did something with organs. Kevin and Bob feared the worst, but started playing anyway. The first song of Birth of Joy was ready that same day.

When the band released their debut Make Things Happen independently in 2010, all 1000 copies were sold. Birth of Joy played a record number of shows at the Popronde, appeared at festivals and made such an impression on the Suburban delegation during a performance at Zwarte Cross 2011 that the band received a contract that same day. Life in Babalou was actually already finished by then.

With a sound that combines the excitement of MC5 with the seduction of The Doors, Birth Of Joy takes us on a journey to a mysterious place with Life In Babalou. There is fun, seduction, but in the distance something sinister lurks. Just like the band, actually. As wild and uninhibited as the trio works its way through a set of organ rock live, the lyrics can be just as dark. Big bad guys, poverty, tiredness of life, that kind of thing.

Suburban Records

At Suburban Records, we believe that all great music has one thing in common: soul. Soul has the unique ability to communicate happiness, love, sorrow, and anger — all the essential qualities that distinguish an average song from a unique one. When we sign new artists, we look for that soul in their songs and sound, as well as in the stories they tell. Within these parameters, we give our artists total creative freedom, which we consider essential.
