Joep Pelt – Lomax Sessions
On his first solo album in over five years, guitar globetrotter Joep Pelt pays tribute to musical explorers John and Alan Lomax.
Armed with just his guitar, harmonica and voice, Joep gives a personal twist to songs they first recorded, such as Black Betty, Sloop John B and Do Re Mi. The result is a personal album without frills, with which Joep takes you back to the origins of Western pop music.
John Lomax and his son Alan had made thousands of field recordings of traditional music styles in the US between 1934 and 1978 on behalf of the cultural institution ‘Library of Congress’, before they were permanently displaced by modern inventions such as radio, gramophone and jukebox. John and Alan Lomax discovered greats such as Muddy Waters, Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie and rescued countless songs from oblivion. Musical geniuses of the 1960s, such as Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Brian Wilson, subsequently brought the obscure Lomax field recordings to the general public and thus ensured a lasting influence on the development of pop music.
Although his musical life has now taken him far beyond the Mississippi Delta, via the Caribbean to the musical heart of Africa, the Lomax field recordings remain a constant source of inspiration for Joep. The album also contains a booklet full of background information and personal thoughts, richly illustrated with beautiful portraits of Joep’s musical heroes, painted by Simone Ann.
The Lomax Sessions is accompanied by the theatre tour Lomax & The ’60 Folk Revolution (The Land Where The Blues Began). In his musical one-man show, Joep rediscovers the folk revival of the 1960s using the Lomax field recordings. By means of personal stories and of course the songs from the album, Joep takes the audience to the country where the folk revolution began.
