Mercy John – Stereocolor (LP)
Mercy John is embarking on an exciting new path. After years of making a name for themselves in the Americana scene, he and his band present an energetic mix of pop, rock, and indie, perfectly suited for music venues and festivals. Think powerful choruses, driving rhythms, and infectious energy, with the occasional hint of Springsteen and an 80s synthesizer.
The new album, produced by Peter Slager (Bløf) and mixed by Huub Reijnders (Di-rect, Rondé, among others), elevates Mercy John’s music to a new creative level. The songs on the album directly reflect the contradictions in Mercy John’s life: extroverted on stage, introverted and modest in everyday life. Colorful songs with an undertone of despair and black-and-white thinking.
That the contrast can sometimes be stark is evident in the life of the man behind Mercy John: John Verhoeven. Born in the Brabant countryside with a “just act normal” mentality, he ultimately co-wrote Danny Vera’s mega-hit “Roller Coaster.”
The new sound on the new album comes to life thanks to the six-piece Mercy John band, consisting of Rolf Verbaant (guitar), Kirsten Boersma (keyboards), Tom Zwaans (bass), Lynyrd Denissen (drums), and Aike van de Crommert (synths). They give the songs a layered harmony, power where needed, but also depth and tension.
