On May 22, Unmade In Minutes, the new album by Pastel Blank—the project of Canadian songwriter Angus Watt—will be released. Together with a rotating group of musicians from Montreal, Vancouver, and Victoria, Watt is building a distinctive sound in which post-punk, experimental pop, and funk converge. What began as guitar-driven lo-fi indie on earlier releases evolves here into a layered and rhythmically rich whole, with a starring role for percussion, woozy synths, playful samples, and unexpected excursions into saxophone and flute. Unlike traditionally crafted demos, a large part of the album emerged organically in the studio, from jams and improvisation.
