After the unexpected death of her father, singer Liza van POM expected to write a raw and dark album of mourning. Instead, she created Enlightened, Baby: a colorful pop record full of glitter, pink, and catchy melodies. By focusing her attention outward while writing, she found solace in a period of panic, grief, and confusion. Enlightened, Baby looks back and mocks the idea that we can be prepared for the deepest valleys life throws at us. Each of the album’s songs tells a story about “enlightenment” in its own way. Singer Liza focuses on the people around her—from a breakup to a lonely divorce and a cult leader with delusions of grandeur—where unexpected moments of insight emerge.
