Tim Akkerman – Lions Don’t Cry
Anyone who hears his new album Lions Don’t Cry will probably think he’s back where he started: it’s a rock album of the highest order that reminds us of his time as frontman of Di-rect. But there’s more to it than that. After a sold-out club and theatre tour with ‘Tim Sings The Boss’, during which he performed songs by his great hero Bruce Springsteen, he rediscovered his love for American rock. He let this love for Bruce, Pearl Jam and Ryan Adams speak for itself and wrote ten songs that came straight from the heart.
Lions Don’t Cry has become a very personal album. After fourteen years of marriage, Tim is a single father, and he combines his musicianship with the love for his children. Dealing with his relationship is a common thread throughout Lions Don’t Cry: from sadness with his children to taking a new path himself – the album sounds like a personal letter that everyone can read.
Another thing Tim has never done is put his band in the foreground. After almost ten years of playing together, crisscrossing the Netherlands, his regular band has become a close group of friends. It makes perfect sense to present themselves as one. Since the release of the first single Underestimate, the band has been known as ‘Tim Akkerman & The Ivy League’. Or, as Tim himself says: ‘If it feels good, you should just do it.’
